Francesca Miccoli

Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Basel

Adjunct Lecturer, University of Milan

Francesca is a postdoctoral researcher at the University Basel, working on the project “Just Parenthood: The Ethics and Politics of Childrearing in the 21st Century”. She is also affiliated with the University of Milan, as an Adjunct Lecturer teaching two undergraduate courses on Theories of equality and Rights and Law and Social Change. Previously, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Milan (January-August 2023). Having completed her Law degree at the University of Bologna in 2017, she earned a Ph.D. in Political Studies at the University of Milan in 2022. She grew up in Chieti, a small city in Southern Italy, and she lived in Bologna, Leuven, Bruxelles, Milan, York, and Basel. When she’s not doing philosophy, she’s mostly reading novels and traveling. She also facilitated SessFem twice.

Francesca’s research interests range from political philosophy, sociology of law, bioethics, and feminist theory. Her master’s thesis explored the philosophical and legal implications of surrogacy from a feminist perspective, while her doctoral dissertation delved into the desirability and feasibility of legal recognition for polyamorous families, combining political liberalism, feminist care ethics, and queer family normativity. Her current research involves the legal implications of family transformations on family law regimes and socio-legal norms, and the normative implications of parenting and co-parenting, with a specific focus on multi-parenthood, the valorization of intentionality and care to build an ethics of just parenthood, equality between different kinds of families, and gender equality.
